How to kick-start  your fitness journey

September - 2018

Throughout this blog there are a few underlying themes…. keeping it simple...not getting frozen by fear… and letting go of the desire to be perfect. One of the most common questions I get as a trainer is, “How should I embark on my fitness journey; I do not know where I should start?” I believe that this is where many of us get stuck as we consider how to begin our pursuit of vitality, health and fitness. Fear and sometimes a perceived or true lack of knowledge can be the biggest hurdle. We just don't know where to start.

To anyone that agrees my hope is that at least one of these quick tips will resonate with, inspire and push you forward.

#1. Set small goals

“One small step for man….” Let’s try not to overthink or complicate this as that can potentially prevent us from taking the first step. Once we have our end goal in mind, if we pick then choose a smaller goal that we can use as a milestone, our chances of success and then building upon small wins will generate momentum. Whether this goal is to fit into an old dress, to have more energy, to get more sleep, to workout 5 days a week etc… set it and forget it.

#2. Don’t procrastinate

“Do not pass go, do not collect $200.” The next step is to immediately take action. Don’t procrastinate. The more time we take to get started the more we open ourselves up for excuses, and doubt.

#3. Be consistent

“It takes 21 days to form a habit.” Once the wheels are moving, keep moving forward. Be consistent, no excuses. Learn the games that your mind will play and the lies that you will try to tell yourself to cheat your success. Emotions are temporary. Try not to let one bad moment, decision, or day ruin your progress. If you fall, don’t stay down, get back up.

#4. Pick low lying fruit

“Work SMART and hard.” Sometimes the low lying fruit can be overlooked. Sometimes we can get overwhelmed when we think too far ahead or strive for perfection, so it’s important that we don’t overlook quick changes that we can implement to help launch us in the right direction. These small changes may be cutting back on our consumption of products with lots of simple sugars such as sodas, or creamers, or making a conscious effort to try to limit the amount of processed foods we consume. You would be surprised how these quick changes add up to long term results.

#5. Celebrate your wins

“All work and no fun makes Jane a dull girl.” It’s so important to celebrate your wins and to measure your progress. Sometimes we get so caught up in the destination that we do not enjoy the journey and it is so important that we take the time to give ourselves credit for small wins and that we appreciate the lessons we learn along the way. It is very helpful to track your progress in more than one way. Don’t just rely on the scale to define a win, loss or progress but consider other factors… did you work out today, did you hit your macros, did you drop an inch, do you feel more confident, do you have more energy?

I would love to hear your thoughts, and what other ways you have found to be successful to just get started on your fitness journey. Head over to my Instagram or Facebook and leave a comment!
